Size of companies

Apart from revenue, size and market cap, an interesting way of measuring company size is by the number of employees. While there is no registry for the number of employees, the Employee Provident Fund offers a useful proxy for this.

The data below shows the number of employees for every company registered at EPF, as of Feb 2013, at each of the 120 provident fund offices across India. You can search for a specific company, or click on one of the boxes to read about large companies in an industry.

120 EPF offices in India

The Employees' Provident Fund of India administers the mandatory Provident Fund (social security) scheme for all employers. Managing assets of over USD 90 billion, the EPF is one of the largest financial institutions in the country.

The EPF is divided into zones (e.g. North Zone, South Zone, etc), and further has 120 offices including regional and sub-regional offices. The map on the right shows each of these offices at their location.

As of Feb 2013, over 400,000 organisations are registered with the EPF. This visualisation is an exploration of the number of employees registered by each of these organisations.

Click on one of the boxes numbered 1, 2, etc. above to see stories about specific organisations or places.

Type a company or place name in the search box above to find the number of employees it has, and their locations.

Hover over the circles on the right to see the location they are registered at, and their number.

The largest employers

Below are the top 20 organisations by employee count. Leading the charge is Tata Consultancy Services, the only single organisation with over 200,000 employees. Larsen - Toubro, however, easily breaks this record when employees are aggregated across its various entities. Apart from the IT and construction companies, Security and Intelligence Service India, a provider of private security services, is also in the list.

The TATA Group

With nearly 500,000 employees, the TATA group is one of the largest employers in the country. Nearly half of these are employees of Tata Consultancy Services, which is registered in Mumbai. But the notable companies outside Mumbai are Tata Motors at Pune, Tata Projects at Hyderabad, and Tata Steel at Jamshedpur -- where it accounts for about 10% of all registered employees.

The Reliance Group

The bulk of Reliance's employees are registered via M/S Reliance HR Services, based out of Vashi (Mumbai), making it difficult to identify the specific organisations' sizes and their distribution. It is notable, through that the bulk of the employees outside of Mumbai are in Gujarat (Rajkot, Vadodara, Surat and Naroda)

The Birla Group

Compared to the Tatas or Reliance group, the Birla group is fairly evenly spread across the country, with a notable presence in Kolkata. The largest business from a people perspective is Aditya Birla Minacs, the BPO arm of the group.

Oil & Petrochem

The oil companies, beginning with ONGC, are mainly registered in Mumbai and Delhi. Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum are reasonably well distributed across the metros, while Reliance Petrochemicals operates mainly out of Surat and Rajkot.

The I.T. companies

Other than construction, IT is the industry that currently employes the largest number of employees on the Provident Fund, with TCS accounting for nearly 10% of the industry. There is a clear demarcation between the #1 (TCS), the next 5 (Cognizant, Infosys, Accenture, IBM, Wipro), and the rest, with Tech Mahindra bridging the gap.

Security services

A surprising entry and a very large provider of employment are the security services companies. With the growth of services, IT and BPO, this industry has quietly boomed. The largest employer is Patna-based Security and Intelligence Service, which is over twice as large as its nearest competitor. Among the industries, this is one of the most spread out geographically. G4S, for example, has registered employees across the country.

Financial services

The concentration of the financial services sector in Mumbai is evident. However, this only lists private organisations, not the larger public sector (e.g. Punjab National Bank). HDFC and ICICI are the largest single employers, being the leaders in the retail banking space, and are both located in Mumbai.

Interesting observations

  • Govt organisations are almost entirely in the Delhi - UP belt
  • While Google is only registered in Hyderabad, there is a small Tirunelveli based firm called Google Tradings infringing on the trademark.
  • Yahoo, Facebook, Google and Microsoft are present. Twitter is not.
  • A few offices have a single organisation that dominates the employment space. For example Patna has SIS, Park Street has L&T, Guwahati has Axom Sarba Siksha, Varanasi has Hindalco, Lucknow has Sahara, and so on.
  • You will find a number of schools (mostly in Delhi and Tamil Nadu), colleges (most in Tamil Nadu) and research institutes.
  • And here's Gramener, with our registered employees as of Feb 2013.
